FEP type PTFE fluoropolymers (performance plastics) offer excellent chemical and temperature resistance, but lack the resiliency of elastomers (rubber) required to maintain a quality seal.

FEP type PTFE fluoropolymers (performance plastics) offer excellent chemical and temperature resistance, but lack the resiliency of elastomers (rubber) required to maintain a quality seal. Encapsulated and spring energized seals combine the best sealing features of plastics, elastomers and steel springs to increase chemical and temperature performance compared to most solid elastomers. The main offsetting limitation is PTFE's stiffness that can require custom gland design to maximize sealing by using the right amount of compression force to maintain a seal without over compressing which can shorten seal life. PFA type PTFE is also available for additional upper temperature resistance (up to plus 575 degree F short exposure) but not widely used due to reduced sealing performance.

Encapsulated o-rings and spring energized seals offer many performance benefits in demanding environments. FEP and PFA fluoropolymer shell delivers excellent chemical resistance with the energizing resiliency of a rubber elastomer core combines the best of both materials for o-rings with extreme chemical and temperature resistance.

O-Ring with a FEP or PFA outer layer encapsulating a silicone core. The shell offers excellent chemical and temperature resistance while the silicone core provides the resiliency needed to provide effective sealing. Readily available in common USA and metric cross-sections and nearly unlimited diameters, improved chemical resistance.
